A density-adaptive spatiotemporal interaction network with Motif Matrix for premature contraction detection

Abstract Premature atrial contraction (PAC) and premature ventricular contraction (PVC) are two predominant subtypes of cardiac arrhythmias characterized by ectopic electrical impulses. Conventional diagnostic approaches for PAC and PVC detection primarily rely on manual visual inspection of electrocardiograms, which is inherently labor-intensive, time-consuming and prone to diagnostic variability due to subjective interpretation. To this end, we develop a novel Density-Adaptive model based on Motif Matrix (NDAMM) that contains Adaptive Spatial Interaction block and Adaptive Temporal Interaction block for automated PAC and PVC classification. Specifically, a multi-scale feature fusion strategy is utilized to adaptively select an optimal scope of neighbors participating in information interaction in spatial dimension and an atrous pyramidal pooling mechanism is exploited to generate the interaction probability for each agent in temporal dimension. The effectiveness of our NDAMM is evaluated across the two public databases. The results achieve stable improvements over the existing approaches and strike a trade-off between performance and complexity. Visualization analysis further confirms the interpretability thus exhibiting application potential in several areas such as epilepsy prediction.
